WK 1 Project (Portfolio Competency): My MCBS Story Expanded

Before I started the MCBS program Like most high school graduates think they know what they want to do right away, I also started at a Community College about 45 minutes from the house; Three years went by and I had already changed my major twice and had no idea what I wanted to truly make me happy because I didn't want just any paper after graduating, so I decided to put college on hold. I became a NJ Licensed Manicurist in 2011; As well as, a Certified Mixologist in 2012, and I recently made my two year mark as a Replenish Associate at Michaels Arts And Crafts.

I had always thought I wanted to help people and while that still is true til this day, back then I was unsure on how I wanted to help because all I knew I didn't want to sit behind a desk in a Psychologist office; Yet, I still wanted to help people reach their potential goals in a more creative manner. I have always had an interest in the media industry and photography, as I always wanted to be a model or start out somewhere there; so I had changed my major to Communications Television.

But then After those three years, two degree changes in that community college, I realized I didn't want to just help people from a four wall room and another fact that every new semester the follow up for Communications Television kept getting canceled. I knew I was getting no where and quick if I kept continuing shelling out my own money to a school that the professors kept cancelling their classes.

Because of that I left that community college to try my hands on an online school that had a previous name while in High School that I had already taken a home program with, so I began that journey with another degree switch to focus on Business Administration; Not knowing that as fast as I started it it ended just as so, and ironically it's around this time I also discovered Full Sail University through Google search although didn't do anything about it. Time quickly had passed that by now most of my high school classmates had already graduated with their degrees or were about to enter their final year.

{A favorite lyric by The Weepies.}

Because of that I knew I needed to really figure things out fast, that I couldn't just keep shelling out money I didn't have to throw it all away; Therefore, I put my dream aside to really figure out what I wanted for my life. Psychology wasn't what I wanted, and I knew the media industry and being an Entrepreneur was absolutely front and center; Yet, I have always been so timid to go after it.

Because of that I went to Cosmotology school in the fall of 2010 for just nails, where in less than a year recieved my NJ Licensed as a Manicurist in the summer of 2011; In 2012 I went on to take a bartending class for fun, to maybe start shaking off some of those nerves that was making me so timid and I became a certified bartender in as little as one week with my final mixing up 13 drinks in seven minutes! In that same year I met the most amazing man that I didn't think would be my soulmate today, He got me to realize my passion for creativity and media, also really got me to open up that in 2013 I got hired with Michaels Arts And Crafts; It's unbelievable how quickly time passes when you have someone on your side that believes in you, when you don't always believe in yourself -it feels so unreal that I have officially hit the two years and four months mark that I've been working as a Replenishment Associate, even if it is only part time.

Until finally as I always knew I was crafty, creative and most definitely competitive while always knowing my love for music; I've seen some of my favorite artists not getting the hit they deserve in the charts, but seeing these so-called little pop artists now-a-days making it big with these copy cat music, sounds and lyrics; All while a lot of my favorite artists haven't hit the big time as they should for their originality. I have always thought there was something wrong in that department because these raw musical talents out there deserve to be heard and have someone on their side promoting them correctly and pushing them out there to the public; Therefore, as much as I love, appreciate and am ever so grateful for my little job, I knew I was just hungry for more.

And ever since I decided to pursue my passion for media I finally decided to make the call and enroll with Full Sail University's Media Communications Bachelor of Science online program {MCBS} because I have always loved all aspects of media, and I will never understand what took me so long to enroll with FSU, yet I am finally glad that I have and I will never look back. Since I can not choose just one focus of the industry, Media Communications is the right fit and the best challenge for me that has been long in the making to pursue; Futhermore, The future is looking brighter every month while on this journey towards my dreams and at 28, it's better late than never to reach for my dreams in media and getting my artists and clients out in the world for all to hear.

Connect with Your Audience

by: Storytelling for Designers with Stacey Williams-Ng

I felt Stacey Williams Ng's Story was very relatable to my own; Although, I don't know if I ever really considered myself a writer, I just knew I liked to jot down my thoughts and I always tried to have all my pieces sound of much humanity as possible. Hoping I would sound real than a machine to get and keep my audiences trust, in the mist that at least one person could find my story relatable too. There's a time and a place for certain things, but always get your point across with caution how you word things because it can make or break and either you'll sound raw and real or more repetitive and robotic.

From meeting her soon-to-be husband in Italy, dropping everything to move across the world for him, to uncertain what she was going to do in a whole new world where she didn't know anyone but her husband, yet determined none-the-less with a little advice from her mother-in-law to securing becoming a professor in a whole new life setting. Her story was short, sweet and not just relatable, yet motivating and inspirational all while keeping her audience engaged and hopeful.
